How to Gracefully Let Go When the Universe Sends You a Clear Message

Do you ever feel like the universe sends you a message you need to hear? It happened to me this week. Interestingly, what I received related to the letting go theme I’m writing about this month.

You might have read about last week’s letting go mishap when I accidentally deleted my entire email inbox. I recovered, only to be challenged by another ‘adventure’ this week. It’s a doozy! Clearly, the universe thinks I need more letting go practice.

Midweek, I woke up with 500+ other neighbors to the surprise of no Internet or phone due to “cut fibers.” Our service provider assured me it would be fixed within 24 hours, which seemed reasonable. However, I was on a deadline. I was putting the finishing touches on a Zoom workshop being presented the following day. While I had no choice in the technology glitch (it happened and was being worked on,) I did have a choice in how I responded.

There was some initial panic, where I engaged in numerous “what if?” scenarios.

  • What if it’s not fixed in time and I can’t present my workshop?

  • What if I can’t access the information I need to compile my notes?

  • What if the calm day I planned is turned upside down?

  • What if…?

After the panic, technology assessment, and the realization that I could do nothing at that moment, I started letting go. I talked calmly to myself so I could switch gears and put my energy toward completing my workshop notes. I couldn’t afford to have my attitude sabotage the day. Instead, I focused on what I could work on. I let go of what I had no control over, did some creative problem-solving, and stopped the worry-stress-negative self-talk-loop.

I went to Starbucks in the afternoon for Internet access and a much-needed coffee break. I checked a few resources for my notes and caught up on email. I sat by the river and walked down the block to smell the fragrant lilacs. These actions kept me calm and focused.

By the evening, I finished my workshop notes and made alternate plans for presenting if I had no Internet the next day. I also realized how much more I accomplished without interruptions or distractions from the Internet, social media, and the phone.

Are you curious about what happened? When I woke the next day, the Internet and phones were restored. I gave my workshop, which went well, with good attendance and participation. Can you hear my giant exhale?

Life is full of surprises and curve balls. You can’t anticipate when they’ll arrive or what they’ll be. But as always, you do have a choice in how to respond. You can get stuck and paralyzed by the emergency or let go to allow focus, resilience, creativity, and growth to thrive.

What Reasons Motivate Every Client to Easily Let Go of Clutter?

Clutter can be a non-issue. However, for many of my clients, clutter that has established residency in their homes is a big challenge. Here is the thing. With some exceptions, the clutter didn’t appear overnight. It may not have felt problematic until the day you or a family member noticed it. Clutter is tricky in how it collects slowly, one postponed decision or action at a time. Have you noticed how clutter attracts more clutter? When surfaces and spaces are clear of excess, it’s easier to see when papers pile up or clothing draped on chairs are out of place. When there is too much stuff, it can become overwhelming and difficult to find a way forward. So what can you do?

Decluttering is a verb, which involves action. Taking action requires motivation. Identifying your why is essential to motivation, especially when you feel stuck. If your reasons aren’t compelling, then any significant movement will be less likely. The more clarity you have about why you want to change, the greater your chance for success.

 


When I work with my virtual organizing clients, having them articulate their why is a critical part of the work. Even before we begin working together during our initial contact, I listen carefully for their ‘why.’ I ask questions including:

 

What is driving your desire for change?

What prompted your call?

Why now?

 

The ‘why’ becomes a critical ingredient in my clients’ progress. If their reason is non-existent or weak, it could indicate they aren’t ready to move forward. It might also mean they need a different type of help, like a therapist. Or perhaps they don’t have the time and energy right now to devote to making a change.

The ‘why’ is different from a strategy. For example, many of my clients find that scheduling regular virtual organizing sessions provides accountability, which helps them accomplish more in between sessions. Using an accountability partner is a strategy. And sure, they experience a motivation boost knowing that we’re going to meet. However, our scheduled sessions aren’t the why behind the work. The ‘why’ is more personal, impactful, and comes from deep within. Do any of these resonate with you?

  • I don’t want to feel clutter-related stress and anxiety.

  • I don’t want my things to be a burden for my loved ones to handle after I’m gone.

  • I want to have company over without feeling embarrassed by the clutter.

  • I want to feel safe at home so that I don’t trip or fall.

  • I want my priorities to be in alignment with my physical environment.

  • I want to stop wasting time and be able to easily find what I’m looking for.

  • I want to stop overbuying because I have so much clutter I don’t know what I already own.

  • I want to downsize, prepare our house for sale, and then move.

  • I want to make our home ready for the birth of our baby.

  • I want to create calm, uncluttered office space so I can work remotely without distractions.

  • I want my relationship with my spouse to improve. My clutter is a cause of contention.

  • I want to stop paying for storage.

  • I want my home to feel peaceful and calm. The clutter is distracting, and I can’t focus.

  • I want to let go of things taking up space, mental energy and serving no purpose.

  • I want less stuff. It’s too hard for me to maintain and manage.

  • I want to simplify and declutter so I can enjoy the next season of my life.

5 Incredibly Useful Strategies to Calm Your Mind Clutter

Clutter can creep into our lives and consume valuable energy. It can show up physically as paper piles on desks or kitchen counters, clothing flowing out of closets and drawers, or bins full of toys the kids no longer play with. There is also mind clutter, which can consume your thoughts. Physical clutter and mind clutter are closely connected. Have you ever noticed how challenging it is to think, be productive, or relax when your physical environment feels cluttered?

In the same way that I begin writing with a blank page, I engage more successfully in daily life when my space is clear with few distractions. For example, when I’m about to cook, I prefer the kitchen to be clean with uncluttered surfaces and an empty sink. When I work on a project like writing or developing a workshop, I focus better when my desk is clear of paper scraps and other projects. At night, I sleep better, getting into a made bed with clean sheets. Being in a clear, uncluttered place can be energizing or relaxing. 

However, when our mind clutter is dominating the internal conversation, what can you do? There are five effective strategies I regularly use for calming mind clutter. Some of these simultaneously address physical clutter.

 

5 Useful Strategies to Calm Your Mind Clutter

1. Get Out!

Yes. You guessed it. To clear the mind, getting outside for a walk is highly effective. Even a small dose of fresh air, be it five, ten, or sixty minutes, can do wonders for the cluttered mind. It’s even more beneficial if you can walk in nature. The fragrances of spring are intoxicating- lilacs and Lily of the Valley scent the air.

 

2. Free Write

Grab a pen and your favorite journal or pad of paper, then download the swirl of thoughts onto paper. Don’t worry about editing or organizing your thoughts in any way. Just allow them to flow. You might be surprised what comes out. Writing is an excellent way to unclutter the mind.

3. Just Meditate
Practicing mindfulness meditation is a gentle way to work with a full mind. The idea isn’t to empty your mind during the practice. The quiet allows a place to let thoughts float by without judging or engaging in the content. You can also experiment with focusing on the breath while meditating. This will calm the mind and switch you into the rest and digest mode.

 

4. Shred It!

Shredding paper is so cathartic. As you release and shred physical piles and files, the mind unclutters too. The physical act of releasing enables the mind to also let go. Shredding is one way to unclutter. Any type of letting go of physical objects that have overstayed their welcome work wonders in releasing your mind clutter.

 

5. Take Care

Having jumbled thoughts can be connected to sleeping too few hours, not eating nutritiously, or ignoring self-care. When was the last time you took care of yourself? What did that look like? It’s not selfish to take a bubble bath or extra long shower, get a massage or pedicure, or sleep for eight hours. Relaxation time is essential to reducing mind clutter.

How Do Mindfulness and Focus Remarkably Appear in Your Life?

There is something so intoxicating about being present and mindful. Yet, it can also be quite elusive. Inner dialogue, activities, and people pulling us in other directions can create a frenzied, chaotic state. When we’re feeling this way, mindfulness is distant. I’ve discovered something in my daily mindfulness meditation practice that is helpful for me, which might benefit you too.

One of the principles of mindfulness practice is to focus your attention on something like breath, sensations, or sounds. This might seem simple to do, but what inevitably happens is that your mind will wander. One moment you are breathing in, breathing out, and noticing the breath. The next minute you’re creating and organizing to-do lists in your head. Oops.

 

What do you do? Without judgment, you mindfully notice that your focus shifted. Then you gently return back to the breath. No berating, no panic. You just calmly return to the object of your attention. It is in this practice of shifting attention, awareness, and return that we become more mindful. We strengthen these muscles, which can be used in other areas of our lives.

Recently, I spent time outside doing yard work and trimming shrubs. On this crisp fall day, it felt energizing working outdoors. As I cut and cleaned up debris, I focused only on what was before me. It was so enjoyable to move, hear the rustle of the leaves, the chirping of the birds, and the snip, snip sound of my cutters. I clipped, observed, assessed, and cut some more. I didn’t rush. 

It was satisfying to see the results. While there were many other things I could have been doing, I allowed myself this focused time of mindfulness, presence, and gratitude to work outside doing one cut, one shrub, one mindful action at a time.
