3 Essentials for New Year

@2012 Photo by Linda SamuelsWhile New Year's Eve has come and gone, the wonderful energy from that night remains. I loved celebrating the end of one year and the beginning of another with our family and friends. The evening included eating, dancing, laughing, singing, reflecting and playing games. While the celebration has ended, the New Year essentials remain- fresh starts, bit of sparkle, and hope for what is possible.

1. Fresh Start - The New Year brings the gift of a clean slate. Imagine a blank canvas beautifully white like a fresh blanket of snow. You get a do-over, a chance to paint a new picture. The possibilities are bountiful as you consider the people, places and growth opportunities that will cover your canvas. Breathe deeply and joyfully embrace this new beginning.

2. Sparkle - Consider the "sparkle" factor. While I actually love glittery, reflective objects, what I'm really thinking about here is the sparkle within. What makes you glow? What gives you energy? How can you incorporate more inner sparkle this year? You deserve to shine.

3. Hope - We all need hope. Perhaps this past year wasn't as successful or happy or as organized as we wanted. We have the possibility to leave the negative behind and look toward the future. What are you hoping for? What do you want your days to look and feel like? What's possible for you in the coming months? Allow hope to reign.

As I say my goodbyes and reflect about the past year, I am grateful for what was. I am hopeful about what comes next. I wish each of you a spectacular year of joy, hope, love, and success. What are you imagining?

What's Your Next Step?

During the past few winter months, I’ve written about fresh starts and embracing change. Today is the first day of a new month, and my focus shifts to the next steps. I write more about this topic in chapter three of my book, The Other Side of Organized. Recently, I had a funny conversation with my husband that relates to the next step theme.

Steve was in the kitchen having a snack. I was working on my computer. He called out to me and asked, “These honeys don’t have to be out here, do they?” Something about trying to decipher what he was referring to and the way he phrased it made me go into a tears-rolling-down-the-cheeks fit of laughter.

The Takeaway

Here is my takeaway. The “honeys” he was referring to was not him, because I call him Honey, but the two jars of honey that had been sitting on our kitchen counter since December when our girls were home from their college breaks. The honey is normally stored in the pantry. As our girls enjoy putting honey in their tea, the jars were left out as a convenience for them. On this particular evening, Steve looked at those jars and thought, “Why are they still here?” After identifying the issue (the girls were no longer home. Therefore, we didn’t need to keep the jars out), he took the next step and returned the honey back to the pantry.

Your Next Step

That’s what the next steps are often about. We can easily go through our lives not thinking about what our goal or the bigger picture is about. Therefore, we don’t know what action to take because we aren’t thinking about making changes. Things end up in places they don't belong, or we continue habits that don't really serve us. We get complacent and stop questioning. However, once we give ourselves the space to become aware, these actions or next steps become very clear. The honey jars no longer served a purpose by being on the counter. What unnecessary thing is getting in the way of your bigger picture or goal?

As you try to figure out what to do next, perhaps Steve’s question will not only bring a smile to your face but also prompt you to question and act. “These honeys don’t have to be out here, do they?”

What next step will bring you closer to your goal? I invite you to join in the conversation and share your thoughts.

Even Icicles Change
Frozen+foliage.jpg

During a recent winter storm, my daughter called out to me from her room to see something. When I walked in, she had a big smile on her face and was pointing to beautiful icicles that had formed on the rhododendron outside her window.  They glistened in the light with an aura of wonder. We stopped to enjoy nature’s display.

I kept thinking about the image of the icicles. They were frozen and still. Sometimes we feel that way. We get stuck where we are. We aren’t sure which direction to move. We might even be afraid of change. So we wait. We stop. We freeze.

Then something happens. A light bulb goes off. We feel a little bit brave. We get uncomfortable just waiting. We feel inspired. We make the choice to take a tiny step forward. We’re like the icicle that slowly melts as the sun shines on us. First, there’s one drip, then another. Before you know it, the icicle is gone and the branch is free to sway in the breeze. We are unencumbered by fear, indecision and procrastination. We are not just a bystander of change; we are actually seeking out and directing it.

Last month I took time to think about fresh starts and what shape I wanted the New Year to take. I thought about and prioritized my goals. I slowly began putting ideas into action. This month, I’m focused on pursuing the changes that I seek.

The winter is in full force with its many icicles and ever growing mounds of snow. Even so, I feel more like those melted droplets of water that changed from a state of stillness and contemplation to action.

What changes are you in the midst of right now?
